Great news!
—Colin's catchphrase

Colin the Computer is the main antagonist of "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4", a secondary character in Friendship and a minor character in "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 6." He teaches the main trio about computers and the virtual world. He is voiced by Joe Pelling.

Colin, much like many of the other teachers from the web series, re-appears as a minor character in the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared television series, and he can be seen in the episode "Friendship".

Appearance[]

Colin is a slightly larger than average puppet, at his full height standing taller than Duck and Yellow Guy but shorter than Red Guy. He is chunky, rectangular and beige-coloured like an old-fashioned personal computer. His head is a monitor, with square eyes side-by-side with a rectangular mouth beneath a large display screen for a forehead. If he were a humanoid, his "cranium" by analogy would be proportionately very large, representing his high intelligence. Despite this, there is a door in his forehead that opens to reveal that his "digital mind" is surprisingly compact and apparently a mixture of wires, shiny stones and fleshy organic material.

He speaks with a glitchy, synthetic computer voice and slightly awkward, unnatural intonation that sounds like early speech synthesizers. He demonstrates a very large vocal range that tops out with unpleasant high-pitched screeching. He is accompanied by a printer that prints out documents such as adverts for Oats and an article about eagles.

When standing upright, Colin's keyboard goes vertical and becomes his torso, and his arms and legs are black cables. He has a computer mouse for each foot. Otherwise he perches on a stand and lays out his keyboard and mice on a desk or table like a regular desktop. His hands look like mouse pointer icons that can change appearance at will, e.g. to change into an arrow, or an hourglass. His keyboard has several rows of keys that are able to change colour between red, yellow, blue and even green, despite green not being deemed a creative colour. His teeth make a quiet, keyboard-like clacking sound whenever he speaks in the TV series.

The content shown on Colin's screen is dynamic. In Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4, it displays an image of a wrench, a nut, and a screw by default, though it frequently changes throughout the episode. In Friendship, Colin's display becomes important to the episode's main plot, showing much more sophisticated applications such as games, email, and the informational website of Dr. Bushman M.D.

When Colin gets very angry, red jagged lines run over his eyes, his pupils turn green, his screen flashes green light, green fluid runs out of his eyes and mouth and his hands turn into red wires shaped like human hands.

In the episode "Friendship" of the television series, it's also seen that he's able to stretch his own face/monitor's width at will to achieve a wider aspect ratio when required.

Origin, reproduction and life-cycle[]

Computer plant

Red Guy plucks Colin the Computer from the computer plant

In the opening scene of Friendship, it is shown that Colin the Computer was made by a computer plant: not a factory, but in the sense of a literal plant that was budding baby computers and being tended to and watered by Red Guy and Duck. When a baby computer was ripe and fully developed, he was picked by Red Guy who tossed him onto a rug in the living room, at which point he instantly spawned into the full sized Colin the Computer. The gang declared this to be "Computer Day", the one day a year they get to go online. At the end of the episode, Colin declares his love for the gang and then leaves the House, vanishing digitally as he steps through the door. Together this hints that it takes a entire year for a computer to grow to full maturity, and then migrates from its birthplace after only one day, possibly to head for the digital world.

Before departing, Colin gave the three guys a "special glass spherical computer" that he invented with his clever smart-boy brain, and which was effectively his offspring. This new machine was initially as small as the budding baby computers at the beginning of the episode, and may well have been the next step in computing evolution, allowing the guys to access the internet every day, not just one day a year. Unfortunately, it is impossible to ever know for sure what would have come to fruition as the fragile device was carelessly knocked over by Yellow Guy, smashing it to pieces before it could ever be used.

Personality[]

ColinClever

Colin bragging how clever he is

In his first appearance, Colin is eager to help the three guys find out new information about the world, although not the information they actually want or need. He comes across as slightly arrogant, bragging about how "clever" he is and how he is a "smart boy". He also seems to be quite interruptive. Sometimes he ignores queries as directed by the puppets, preferring to espouse the benefits of himself or the "digital world". He also likes aggressively gathering personal information and seems to be obsessed with oats, continuously showing them to the puppets, but he doesn't like being touched.

Despite claiming that he is very clever, he has been shown to make frequent grammatical errors while speaking. ("Do a digital dancing", "I'm very clevery guy" and "count to a fifty in the blink of my eye.")

In the television series however, his personality is quite different. He's much friendlier with the puppets, apparently having been "tamed" somewhat, and also does not mind being touched at all, even complimenting Duck’s firm grip on the mouse. They all seem to have learned their lessons from their first encounter with one another. He is more helpful by giving them the information they want, but dutifully obstructive when Yellow Guy forgets the password.

Like everyone else, Colin the Computer does not seem to like Warren the Eagle. For example, when Warren claims to be an eagle, Colin notes that "eagles have wings", printing out an encyclopaedia article to cite his sources. Furthermore, when Duck points out that Warren is a mere freelancer riding on the coattails of the OK Stop Organisation, Colin cheerfully declares that "freelancers deserve to die!". This may be because as a computer he would want freelancers' organic creativity to be rendered obsolete by smart-boy generative AI, or it might have just been a dig to ruffle Warren's eagle feathers. He also joins the three guys to roast Warren with further insults. Despite apparently disliking Warren on a personal level, Colin seems to learn more than the other puppets about the meaning of friendship from the episode. As he leaves he says "I love you!" to them, displays a primitive heart emoji on his screen and as a token of gratitude gives them a new computer that promises to allow them to go to the internet anytime they want, not just "Computer Day".

Trivia[]

  • He was confirmed to be named "Colin" by Becky Sloan on her twitter account, although his name was never used on-screen.[1]
  • Colin demonstrates the largest vocal range of any character in the series.
  • Colin's keyboard changes in various shots.
  • Colin's late responses to Red Guy could possibly be a reference to slow internet.
  • He seems to like asking them questions instead of answering their questions.
    • This shows that, like Tony, Colin is evasive about answering questions when it's against him or his teachings.
  • Colin is the only one out of the original web series teachers, who is a major character in the episode they appear in, in the TV series.
  • In Episode 6, Colin appears completely digitally unlike the rest of the teachers, and in Friendship has a completely new puppet for both his head and body. This is because during the creation of Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared 4, Colin's original puppet was stained for the "DON'T TOUCH ME" scene, which ruined usage for the puppet and so he could not appear again without making a new puppet.
